Ask Dr. Schultz
what is the best treatment for hypertrophic scars caused by acne?
Treatment for hypertrophic scars caused by acne depends on how old the scar is and whether it is still pink. Relatively new pink hypertrophic scars are best treated by a dermatologist with “red” lasers and if necessary, tiny injections of cortisone directly into the scar. If the scars are older and not pink, then only cortisone injections are used and are still effective. Relatively new pink hypertrophic scars can also be helped with over the counter scar treatments like Mederma, but that is not nearly as effective as the other treatments mentioned above.
