Ask Dr. Schultz
Do i need to use sunscreen and moisturizer both or just one of the two?
I have never really used skincare products or makeup, just cause I don’t know how.
I was wondering if I should use sun screen and moisturizer both, or just one of them? and can I apply makeup on top of both.
I’m thinking of getting exfoliator to clean my face, night serum and either moisturizer or sunscreen to use daily with and without makeup.
Hi Kati, thanks for your question. I always recommend that my patients use a sunscreen 365 days a year to protect their skin from damage. Most sunscreens are moisturizers with added sunscreen ingredients, so in that case, you only need your moisturizer with added SPF. If your skin type needs extra moisture, I recommend using one on top of your sunscreen. Yes, you can apply makeup on top of both.
If you’re looking for exfoliation, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen, this is the routine I recommend to my patients for both morning and night:
AM Routine:
- Cleanser (like BeautyRx’s Refreshing Cleanser)
- Toner (like our Clarifying Toner)
- Sunscreen (like Solar Defense Sheer Sunscreen SPF 50)
- Moisturizer (like Soothing Moisture Cream)
PM Routine:
- Cleanser
- Toner
- Exfoliant (like Essential 8% Exfoliating Serum)
- Antioxidant (like Triple Vitamin C Serum)
- Moisturizer
