What is the best SPF to use?

Asked by Caitlin H 3 Rep.

What SPF should I be using? Does the number matter?

Great question! Sunscreens display their SPF (sun protection factor) on the product label. The SPF indicates the amount of UVB light that will pass through the product when applied in a thin layer of standard thickness.A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will allow one-fifteenth of the UVB light striking it to pass through on the skin. I always recommend that my patients use an SPF of at least 15, and that the product provides broad-spectrum protection against the damaging UVA rays (SPF only protects against UVB. But the most important thing: Wear sunscreen every day, and wear the one you like, because you’ll be more likely to use it!
